Wait! What about the 40 days a year I do research. There's my vacation. What about the sick days we don't get? Sure I can cancel class or burdon a colleague but here is nothing in the system to ensure the work continues as it should. An office workers absence is felt by one or possible two. My absence affects 90 people.
Right. Those summer months are often spent off doing archival or anthropological work in some provincial administrative center in Northeast Sandinyourbuttistan. Meanwhile, back in the world, the spouse and kids would like you to go on vacation with them and give you snark for being away or at work all the time. Yes, the college professorship is a highly attractive job. But not because it is "easy" or overpaid.
