What else can't they do? Everything involved in this post. They can't even use Google to look up information and they can't manage to upload a file to the LMS.
college students cannot...follow instructions, pay attention, cite their work correctly, dress appropriately, put away their damn phones, imagine their proffie has a life outside of school...
...spell, speak in sentences (let alone paragraphs), make a cogent argument on any topic, understand the meaning of "cogent", STFU in lectures, go 5 minutes without screen time, believe in life after college, name a single world capital, name their Senators and Representatives, show compassion to peers in trouble (let alone to those whom they don't know) ....
- do any amount of work without threatening to have their instructor or prof fired,
- settle minor grievances with their instructor or prof without involving a departmental or institutional administrator,
- solve fundamental mathematical expressions such as quadratic equations without having to resort to their calculators, or
- pass an open-book exam which is based on questions from older exams, copies of which were on reserve in the library and which were announced in previous lectures.
College student cannot conduct themselves in a way showing good manners. They don't know it's quite rude to address anyone by their last name only. Whenever I call students on this, they think I am being huffy about not being addressed as "Doctor" or "Professor." That's not the issue: only an army sergeant may address anyone by their last name only, and one doesn't need to have served in the military to know that, since I knew it at age 12. Here's an article on why college graduates can't get jobs because of their lack of people skills, or "soft skills":
Students can't understand that they shouldn't expect a prof or instructor to be their "friend" or "best buddy" and that a course is not a democracy.
They also can't understand that addressing that person in an informal manner is considered rude. ("Hey, how's it goin', Quarty?") It's not just about respecting the prof or instructor--it's also about respecting the office that he or she holds.
Unfortunately, in the department where I used to teach, *I* was the one who was being a stuffed shirt if I objected to that. (I didn't create a "safe learning environment" or some such thing.)
There's some amazing Santa Fe Sid post from the past that I can't find. I saw his name and remembered it. The search bar is for shit. Anyone help me find it? I can't even recall the topic. It was just dead on, though. Is there a way besides the search bar to find things?

ReplyDelete... turn in their fucking revisions timely...
ReplyDeleteIt's not my time, kids. It's yours.

Sometimes I wonder whether these kids born in a barn, or whether they were raised by wolves on the steppes---NOT "steps," for crying out loud.
