I *SO* love this. I have not been teaching long, but it always bugs me when professors forget how sweet students can be. This is a big adventure for the students, and this video really captures how wonderful and innocent they can be!! BRAVO!
I actually think this is sort of brilliant, too, because my students seem such cyphers to me. If I could read their blogs or watch their "V-logs," I think I'd understand them better, be better able to reach them.
Does anyone else wish their 8 am class was full of these kids? I do.
This was really really cool. I teach at a little college in Kansas, and I know my own students well enough that they display their true selves to me, like these young men and women do in their YouTube tapes. It's refreshing to see how sweet they are, because too many times we forget and judge them all as snowflakes. Well done on making this timely and fun video! (A VidShizzle I wouldn't mind watching again!)
I just spent the weekend moving freshmen into one of our new dorms at a large state uni in the midwest. I do this every year and it's always such a joy. The young people in this video are a great representation of the innocence and inexperience the typical freshman brings to the first days of college, and I, for one, am glad that this page recognizes that.
Well done and huzzah to whomever made this video.
It's our first day, too, and I'm going in with a smile on my face - because I teach, too!
PS: Love that clip where the young woman says, "It's important to get your reading done early because.........."
I, too, am loving it. The first day is something I usually stress over, but seeing these "kids" and knowing that what I fear is really just a big soft gooey group of kids like this, takes a lot of pressure off.
MPEvah! is not faking you. He has a different name. And he clearly HATES you, so why would anyone think he was you? You don't own your avatar, do you? If we can just have people deleted, that might make for a tricky set of decisions for the mods.
If he was using the exact same name as you and pretending it WAS you, I'd say you had an argument. But he's making fun of you, isn't he? And his name is different. I'd hate to see a precedent like that.
Listen, I'll make it clear. I'm NOT pretending to be "Meanest Professor Ever." He's a fucktard. (That's his word, but I like to use it, too.)
I'm the Meanest Professor Evah!, a much more powerful strain of asshole than he. If he can comment and attack people with his "snark," then so can I.
Don't you dare take me off the page. That'd mean you've got yourself an elitist little club where only Meanest Professor Ever can call people fucktards.
That's not fair. I just like my misery like anyone else. No to censorship.
While we're at it, I'd give almost anything if Meanest Professor Ever would be deleted, too. He's extremely rude and immature. If we're going to get in the business of deleting people, he'd be first on my list.
Beautifully done! Snark is fun, but I think it's good to be reminded of the sweet, earnest, brave students, too. Sure, some of these may have their snowflake moments ... but in the end students like these are part of why we teach. Thank you! (And if that makes me a fucktard, well, so be it. Sez you, anyway.)
BRILLIANCE...who made this?

ReplyDeleteCalico sent the video to us...thanks, Cal...
ReplyDeleteI'm loving this. It must have taken hours to do. Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteBut why don't I get these sweet students? Are there lots of YouTube videos from mean and angry students? Where's that video?
But for now this will do, because I get super jaded sometime and it's good to remember how silly and sweet they really are (most of the time.)
How did you ever find all these?

ReplyDeleteThis is amazing. It's reminded me to be nicer to my students today!!!
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm the only bitch who thought: Damn, I'm glad I don't have any freshmen to deal with this semester!
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts in order of occurance:
ReplyDelete1. This isn't making fun of students. What website am I at?
2. Aww, this is kind of nice. I won't yell at my students today. At least, not in German.
3. I'm very glad YouTube didn't exist when I was in college.
Visualize staggering Academic Probation figures.
ReplyDeleteI LIKE IT! Good editing Calico. I know this page is about misery and all that, but this is a nice tonic on my first day, too.
ReplyDeleteThe students in the video? The guy who made it? Anyone who likes it.
ReplyDeleteFucktards.

ReplyDeleteI wish I had a video from my own first day.
Fab, delete the faker please.

ReplyDeleteFine, I'll change my name then.
ReplyDeleteCal was always a whiz with the editing...nice job, brother.
ReplyDeleteNicely done. I don't know I could sit through 20 student vlogs, but I could watch compilations like this any time...do more!
