Instead of the shitty weather of yet another Philly or NYC MLA, we've got a super sweet forecast for your dry academic wonks who are likely arriving today or tomorrow.
Yeah, we had some rain - you might have heard about it. But shit, man, it never rains in Southern California, man, but it pours. But that shit is gone. We've got a doozy of a sweet weekend for you. Srsly!
As for what to do between panels on Autoerotic Didactism in the poetry of Robert Frost and The Power of Smudgepotburning Your High School Diary, you could certainly mosey over to the Little Theater LA which putting on a barnburning series of short plays by Shel Silverstein. My roommate Claude is one of the set designers, and he says the show is SIQ!
And if that's a little too out there for you, then check out a concert from John McCutcheon at Pepperdine. The bullshit flyer I got for that says this: John McCutcheon is America’s balladeer. He sings of the nation’s heritage, channeling the conscience of our people into streams of poetry and melody. He writes about subjects both small and great, from a child’s haircut to human dignity—issues eternal and enduring. Passionate and playful, he is blessed with gifts as a songwriter, storyteller, historian, and musician on guitar, banjo, and Autoharp.
Fuck me! If that isn't a show made for y'all, I don't know what is.
Anyway, so, get on your airline or Trailways bus and get your asses out here.
Outie,
Randy

Is any of this true?
ReplyDeleteSee, there's this website called "Weather Underground" and if you put in the area code, it gives you the forecast! And it's going to be 61-ish during the conference! So there's no bullshit going on here.
ReplyDeleteRandy, whatever you're smoking, my friend, don't bogart it.
ReplyDeleteWell, McCutcheon is real (and very good), as is Silverstein (but I don't know if he writes plays), and both the MLA and LA (and the intersection of the two this year) are, for better or worse, real (or perhaps surreal). Beyond that, I dunno.
