Does it piss anyone else off when they jiggle your door knob instead of knocking? What bothers me most is when they do that and then just leave without knocking. I don't know if it's that they're too stupid to realize that I'm ignoring their inappropriately enacted attempt to access me, or if they're just trying to sneak into an empty office to steal a laptop or textbook (we get e-mailed about every 10 days about the latest major theft, but a lot of my idiot colleagues still leave their doors unlocked, whether they're in there or not), but either way, I don't want to see the face of whomever it is, so I don't bother to go after them.
Idiot or creep, your preserved anonymity saves me a lot of aggravation, and probably you too.
I don't lock my door when I'm in my office. I'm always rather pleased when i get a gentle, tentative knock that isn't repeated; because then I can ignore it ...
ReplyDeleteI think my door locks automatically, and my students do, generally, knock. The people who work in the bullpen just outside my office have taken to assuring visitors who hesitate at my door "oh, don't worry, she's in there; she just closes the door because we're noisy." True enough, but I open the door during office hours. It would be nice to be able to hide at other times if I so choose.
ReplyDeleteI LOCK the door if it's closed. I hate when people just open it and stride in. Dean? Hate it. Students? Hate it. Colleagues? Hate it.
ReplyDeleteLight shines underneath. I'm in there. It IS my office hour. Knock like they did in olden days.
I leave the door open when I'm available and closed (also locked) when I'm not. I also tell my students that if the door is closed I'm not there.
ReplyDeleteIt might just be the campus police, checking to see if your door is locked. Or it may be the friendly neighborhood axe murderer, making a social call...
ReplyDeleteI have a sign I put up when I am working but available: Please knock.
ReplyDeleteI leave my door partly open when I'm in the office. What I really hate is the students who just stand there at the threshold without knocking or clearing their throats or anything. Eventually I get this creepy feeling that I'm being watched and turn towards the door and... yup.
ReplyDeleteBEST ONES are the ones that come in while you are sitting with a student, and you tell them to comeback in 10 minutes and THEY STAND THERE!!! There are seats on the hallway to chill on - your money paid for those!!! Oh and the ones that continue to talk to you even after you needed say I am with a student right now (even though they could plainly see that)
