God, I wish my students had the ambition to make up a 15-hr daily study schedule for themselves! This kid is such a cute little nerd. $50 bet that he'll be in grad school 3 years from now.
I spent my first semester at college regularly making up time "budgets" and schedules that took account of every hour of every day -- and then, of course, blowing them almost immediately. I got a bit better at relaxing and the "setting reasonable goals" thing after that. I think I'd just heard so many warnings about the need for time management in college that I was panicked I'd let things get out of hand. Actually, after years of a very heavy homework load, I was well-prepared for the college reading/writing/studying routine, and even had a reasonable amount of time (more than I'd had in high school) for relaxing.
Now if this "cute little nerd" could just learn to proofread (his spoken English is fine, so I don't think ESL is the main issue).
Yes, I agree. He needs to learn to proofread; perhaps Taylor Mali could help him out with this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OonDPGwAyfQ.
Also, I'm a bit puzzled by his use of the word "revising." He probably means "reviewing," don't you think? Nevertheless, I still think he's bound for grad school.
"Revising" in British English = "reviewing" in American English. It's one of those two-nations-divided-by-a-common-language things. I'm not sure what word the Brits use for re-working a paper above the editing level (I don't think it's "reviewing," though that would be amusing).
Thanks for the clarification, Cassandra! And I second BlackDog's comment- the most fascinating thing about this video is that the kid is actually studying (or at least making a Youtube video about doing so).

ReplyDelete"Papers" for what Americans would call "exams" (toward the end of the video) is, I believe, another Britishism.
ReplyDeleteLook! It's a student! Doing WORK!
