Can I Be Excused?

Why can’t I motivate myself to drive the speed limit to get to campus? Instead, I’m driving like an 80 year old who can’t see over the dash. I’ve stopped at my favorite coffee shop and gotten a ridiculous gourmet drink, and it’s the best thrill I’ve had all day. Sugar and caffeine, two of the major food groups!

No one shows up for office hours, and the secretary says that all the adjunct slots for the spring semester are filled, and I am feeling a total sense of futility.

Class begins, and there are many late arrivals within the first fifteen minutes. As if that weren’t enough, at the break, I have students leave. Some claim illness. One tells me he must go to the airport to pick up relatives, and another gets an emergency text from work. Part of me wants to bolt for the door, too, but I don't.

After two and a half hours of academic haggling, I trudge in the rain back to the car. When I turn it on, the radio is playing Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out.” Oh, if only.....

  2. I said to myself, "This is what Post of the Week" should celebrate, an angsty, ennui-fueled mediation that is so true and so authentic.

    And then you DID it...

    Thanks, Gordo...

    Hang in there, AA.
