So It Goes

Email received 10 minutes ago from our student services doyenne (discipline redacted to protect the...whatever. It's coming to all of us, eventually):

"Change in Course Prerequisite

All 200-level Hamster courses excluding HAM 299
From: Successful completion of a 100
level college or university hamster course with a grade of C or better, or sophomore standing, or cons. instr.

To: Successful completion of any 100level college or university hamster course with a grade of C or better, or sophomore standing, or cons. instr., is recommended but not required [emphasis mine]

As you can see, the prerequisite preparation the department used to require is now recommended but no longer required. If you are involved in advising students during the registration process, please keep this change in mind! The department believes this have a positive effect on our 200-level course enrollments, so we encourage you to take that into account when crafting curricular plans."

Enrollments in 200-level courses are down, you see, so we have to make it easier for students to enroll…in courses for which they are likely as not to be under-prepared.

Hooray.

  1. I don't think you are, but please don't blame the messenger for delivering a message they didn't write.

I've been places where a nincompoop academic administrator would write said message and be too chicken to deliver it. (It happens; oh, yes.)
