If people make any more trouble for this site, they'll have to hire adjuncts to fill in. Full time moderators are too expensive.
Kimmie, the loving Mrs. Beaker Ben has a pretty open mind about stuff so this might work out. I'll check but let's keep this on the DL until then, ok babe?
Not to be territorial, Kim, but I believe I spoke for BB way back in the early days. Maybe Not. Mrs. Fab is not open minded about that stuff.
Welcome 'The Wilhelm.' Like Gordo, he's a longtimer. He chose to take a new moniker to avoid conflicts. This will annoy some, won't bother others. I can't do anything about it. Gordo doesn't have the time to maintain the page. He says he misses just being Terry P. and having fun.
I know Wilhelm in the real world. I would have taken the page over again had he not been willing. Seriously, it's not a thing. I know he'll do a great job.
I don't have any good response to the question, "Why is it so hard to keep a moderator?" All I can say is that sometimes it just gets to you.
No hard feelings of any kind. I still come here every day, and love watching the page as it evolves (and devolves), revolves, etc.
The duck comes originally from a great, great post from Terry P., who the newest of you know as Gordo. When Terry P. took over the page, he took on a new moniker to help separate his earlier role as a community member. True to his word he never posted or commented as Terry P. again after he became the moderator.
Anyway, while we were battling through the "why do we just post linked articles without some context" battle, Terry P. / Gordo, gave us this absolute gem.
I trust he'll rejoin us as a regular correspondent and member again.
OK, folks, here's what happened. I remember it like it was just this afternoon ...
[cue dream sequence]
I was talking a break from 15 straight minutes of work. There was a post by Gordon asking people to list their teaching loads. The comments were going nuts.
Inbetween commenters bitching about how much or little everybody else worked, two crazy posters were involved in what can only be described as hot 'n' raunchy online academic baby-making.
One guy was like, "You're hot. I could grade on those curves."
And the other woman was all, "Let me see your sources. I do it MLA style!"
And he said, "Damn, baby, I'm harder than the tenure and promotion committee."
Then she was like, "I've got my hands under my desk but I'm not texting."
At that point, Gordon shut the whole nasty thing down.
Good grief. This ex-mod club is filling up fast. According to legend there are only 4 readers. And now 4 mods.
And 2.5 million hits.
And we're teaching 70 hours a week?
When do we get the nookie on? The math is not working out.
Terry, you did a great job! And thanks to Fab and Cal (because Cal does as much behind the scenes as anyone, I can assure you), for somehow keeping the lights on. This place is so incredibly nutty.
...and, like some of you others, I've missed the effing drama AGAIN. Sometimes I think you other three manufacture the drama while I'm away from the cool kids' table doing my work thing, and that I've missed nothing at all. But I really enjoyed the recap, BB, even if it's all just a product of your twisted imagination.
@football_fan: works for me, as long as we *have* a moderator. Thanks to Gordo (and Leslie and Fab), welcome to Wilhelm (whoever you are), and welcome back to Terry. I have to say I rather liked Gordo's last post, though the combination of strict-fatherly tone and hirsute-sexy picture weirded me out a bit. Apparently I have issues.
I, too, missed most of the kerfuffle, though the comment thread in the poll post was going downhill around lunchtime. I guess I'll just accept Ben's account. It probably makes as much sense as whatever actually happened.
And I like the duck, which seems to have a calming influence. Or, if you want a bit more excitement, try extreme sheep herding.
And I should have said, thanks to Cal, too, who has a knack for posting the right thing at the right time (but I suppose, according to ff, I was already thanking you in the persons of Fab, Leslie, and Wilhelm).
Compound Cal (the last moderator of RYS) has been CM's consigliere ever since we started. He and I emailed and talked a lot when I started CM, and I know he's been called on by the other moderators as well for advice.
I know I certainly bugged him plenty, and he was never anything but helpful, kind, and reasonable in his replies.
Does it weigh as much as a witch?
ReplyDeleteActually, it's more like a representation of a duck.
ReplyDeleteI'm feeling quite ducky today, myself.
ReplyDeleteThe image is duck-ish.
ReplyDeleteI might even say Mallard-ish!
ReplyDeleteAs long as we're back to the duck, here's a favourite old bit from a news quiz on NPR.
ReplyDeleteIt's not everybody's cup of tea, (indeed, it has nothing to do with academia - not unlike the duck itself) but please, as they say, to enjoy.
Here's an UBER expensive duck:

How about a clockwork duck? http://clockworkduck.com/

Oh ducks, oh ducks, oh ducks.
ReplyDelete(Thanks to Steve Martin, I know what to say)
As this is a picture on College Misery, this must be a poorly rendered graphic of a duck.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if Beaker is married. But if he's not...he's mine!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe amazon ads on my rendition of this page feature an 8' Leather Bull Whip. Um. That.
ReplyDeleteIs Wilhelm our new, fourth, moderator?
ReplyDeleteIf people make any more trouble for this site, they'll have to hire adjuncts to fill in. Full time moderators are too expensive.

Not only does the add for this page include an 8' bull whip but a rather sketchy looking knock off leatherman...
ReplyDeleteBoy I hate it when something goes down while I'm away and I have no idea what happened...
damn that actually teaching and stuff...
Not to be territorial, Kim, but I believe I spoke for BB way back in the early days. Maybe Not. Mrs. Fab is not open minded about that stuff.

Fab!
This is the craziest fucking blog I've ever seen.
ReplyDelete...and that's a good thing.
ReplyDeleteObviously I can't leave CM for a minute. I had a busy few days, and now I check in and I don't know what the fuck is going on.
ReplyDeleteWhat the fuck is going on?
Did anyone else notice that we're going to breech, broach, whatever, 2.5 million hits tonight?
ReplyDeleteFuck a duck! What the fuck happened?
ReplyDeleteWelcome Wilhelm! Good luck with this!
ReplyDeleteDoes Leslie K ever come around as someone else? I wonder....
HI LESLIE K!!!! I THOUGHT YOU DID A GOOD JOB TOO!!!!
BYE GORDO!!!! HOPE YOU RECOVER SOON!!!
And FAB! Eternally grateful. YOu saved my sanity one semester....literally.
Why a duck?
ReplyDeleteCeci n'est pas un canard.
ReplyDeleteSometimes a duck is just a duck.

Thanks for taking the reins for a while, Terry P!

And that's how I remember it, officer.
Hey, I've been drunk for months. Did I miss anything?
ReplyDeleteThat Gordon sounds like a handsome mo-fo.
Terry P.

What do you think Yaro thinks of us?
Leslie K.
@Beaker Ben: Gross.
ReplyDeleteGross, but great.
ReplyDelete1728.
Terry / Gordo,
ReplyDeletethanks for all you did.
Fab, Leslie K and Cal, too.
We never thought Gordo would flee....running this place takes its toll on a person.
ReplyDeleteI was going to make a lame "Wilhelm Scream" joke, thought better of it. To The Wilhelm all I can say is: illegitimi non carborundum.
...and, like some of you others, I've missed the effing drama AGAIN. ReplyDeleteI missed it too. How is it that I *feel* like I check this site constantly but I always miss teh dramas?
ReplyDeletehurummph, I am waiting for a picture of a bobcat; preferably one that just caught and ate a redhawk.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Dr. Lemurpants. I never get to see any of the fun stuff before it's removed. Damn.
ReplyDeleteching chong chang

I am indeed the alpha and the omega. And I had the idea for the iPad first, though I didn't move quickly enough on that.
ReplyDeleteAnd I should have said, thanks to Cal, too, who has a knack for posting the right thing at the right time (but I suppose, according to ff, I was already thanking you in the persons of Fab, Leslie, and Wilhelm).
ReplyDeleteYay terry P!! I thought you had left us.
ReplyDeleteDear Penthouse, I never believed the letters you print until one day I became a mod for a website called College Misery....
