Va. Tech Lockdown Lifted. Gunman Dead.

Update: Statement from Virginia State Police

(Posted: 4:48 p.m.) Virginia State Police responded to Virginia Tech in reference to a shooting in reference to a Virginia Tech police officer being shot and killed while on a traffic stop at the Cassell Coliseum parking lot on Spring Road. Virginia Tech police requested that the Virginia State Police assume primary responsibility for the investigation of the incident.

The individual fled that crime scene in the direction of a second crime scene a quarter of a mile away, where a male body was found at that location with a gunshot wound.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation out of Salem are currently at both crime scenes. Also, our tact team, canine units, and patrol are currently on the Virginia Tech campus assisting the Virginia Tech Police Department.

We are in the early stages of the investigation, and we don’t have any additional details at this time.

The officer is a four-year veteran of the Virginia Tech Police Department and was assigned to patrol.

  2. Gun control? What for? Concealed carry? Sure, why not? Guns don't kill people.

Right. People with guns kill people. Take away the guns, maybe the murder rate goes down because it's a lot harder and more time consuming to choke, stab, or smother someone to death.

I'm just so tired of these stories. So tired of the ease with which we deal out death.

I feel sorry for the policeman's family, for the family of the unidentified second victim, and for the students who are dealing with yet another nightmare on their campus.

I keep hoping every time something like this happens that we will get smart about gun laws, but I suppose I can crap in one hand and hope in the other and see which one fills up first. I guarantee we will see more calls for guns allowed on college campuses so that students can defend themselves--never mind that unless you have training (i.e. military or police), you're not going to react fast enough anyway.

I'm gonna go home and hug my kids.

  3. A terrible story, of course, but I wanted to thank RGM or Fab or Cal or whoever kept this page updated all afternoon.

I've been in my office and I saw 20-30 different updates, all with the newest and best info. It was breathtaking how you kept the news fresh, adding and deleting material as the story shifted.

    I'm sorrowful for those involved.

  4. A friend of mine is on faculty there. I haven't heard from her all day. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the men who were killed, as well as the community who is still so shell-shocked from the horrors from the '07 shootings.
