What's especially stupid is how the people who are freaking out clearly aren't reading the notice that Wikipedia is showing, which clearly states that Wikipedia is down for 24 hours, and why.
Of course they can't read the official notification. If only there was a short version that summarized some of the important parts, written by people who may or may not know what they are talking about.
BTW: There's a Glen Beck ad in the sidebar. Yikes.
I'm teaching a 2.5 week online course. Losing a day due to various site blackouts has been problematic, but not due to Wikipedia. Christ. In the meantime I've taught the kids how to use cached pages and the Internet archive to read the material they could not access, so I suppose it's not a complete loss.
That said, while I understand, appreciate, and agree with the anti-SOPA sentiment, if you are non-corporate educational website removing access to all your material instead of sticking up a front page about SOPA like some of the big name sites SOPA would actually affect isn't very cool. *sigh*
The kind that wear crocodile dundee style hats? Anyway, wikipedia was still accessible and there was a link on the blackout page that told people how to access it. Also, several news outlets mentioned that you could use a mobile version, use it in another language (GASP! - although freetranslation.com was still up), or disable javascript. I don't know if those things actually worked since I didn't look anything up yesterday, but supposedly not completely disabled.
The girl isn't wearing the Australian Slouch hat or even a Cork hat*; that's just the stock chickenshit "cowboy" hat I see more and more people wearing, mostly women in pseudo-shitkicker bars.
____________
* The Slouch hat has a part of the side brim flipped up and held in place with a rivet, the cork had looks like a cowboy hat with corks on strings hanging down. The corks scared off the blow-flies.
This whole page is full of content from other sources. You've stopped even making original posts. What a disgraceful site. Dumb and lazy is no way to be a proffie.
Funny, I was just coming to post a similar list: http://gawker.com/5877192/stupid-high-school-kids-and-teachers-freak-out-over-wikipedia-blackout

Beaker Ben, if you ran for president, I'd vote for you on humor points alone.
DeleteWikipedia is VERY HETEROSEXUAL!!!

The Wayback Machine was also down in protest yesterday.
DeleteWhat kind of retards use gay as an insult?
ReplyDelete[Kidding. Kidding! KID-DING!]
Your intent may have been to use exaggeration to point out the absurdity of the complaints, but, damn!
DeleteReally?
2012 and a large number of people are using "gay" as a perfunctory insult?
Unless that twitter feed was selectively cropped, I'm also quite surprised at the level of 'gay' usage as an insult.
