"Lecture Fail." A Followup.

A recent Chronicle article about the efficacy of lecturing has resulted in some discussion here and elsewhere.

  2. A-freaking-men, sister!

I recently attended a webinar sponsored by one of my universities encouraging faculty to use a screen-capture/video production program to create mini-lessons for students.

OK, fair enough. I'm willing -- eager, even -- to learn about new/improved tools.

But when the presentation focused on topics like "How to find the library" or "How to properly set margins in your paper" I had to ask -- we already have a "student success center," a writing center, a staff of professional librarians -- why should I invest time in such a hand-holding exercise?

"You take charge of your own learning."
    Absi-fucking-lutely!

  3. A buddy of mine is teaching an upper level class right now, smallish and seminar style. Dr. Buddy has trotted out all the tricks of the trade; 'flipped classroom' 'collaborative learning' problem-based learning'; etc. After collecting midterm feedback about the course, Dr. Buddy noticed the #1 trend was: "Dear Dr. Buddy, we'd like more lecturing."

Be careful what you wish for students.

    2. Like Bison's friend and Frank, I have found that the students at my large regional university would prefer I lecture--comments that increase if the class is held before 11:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m.

  5. Hey guys, thanks for the nice words! And for that being my first video I ever posted of myself in professor mode, I'm pretty thankful for the response! This looks like a kick ass blog, I will look around.
