The Past 2 Weeks of Posts.

Cal's version of the same data.

  1. This post raises two issues:

Does the data reflected in this chart include this post also? While that seems like a simple question, there are ethical issues to consider. When preparing the graphic, did the author include the post that had not been published yet? If yes, then was the same accommodation made for other authors? This could be an example of "moderator privilege - having exclusive access to data in order to modify it to accurately reflect future conditions but not present conditions. I'm not sure what the proper action would be, or if there is one. All I know is that I wouldn't want to be in your shoes when the IRB panel finds out. You did get this study cleared with IRB, right?

    Second issue: Mmmm, pie!

    1. Third issue: @Ben: you forgot to close your quotation marks. Or was that deliberate?

  2. This is partially the fault of people like me who want Fab to post stuff for us. Fab, I am sorry. Add me and I will do it myself.

  3. What a awful color you gave me! What is that, rotten peach? What? No nice green like the school colors of a university that is much better than that glorified high school in Oxford? :P

    1. I believe it's called "Salmon." You know: half pink, half orange.

    2. Morose, I like your color, it's nice.

Also, how does a brown cow not get (insert dramatic pause here) brown?

  4. I'm absolutely amazed at that chart. What are the numericals?

  5. 14 days, 57 posts. 36 through me and 21 through the smaller slices. In those smaller slices, most are 1 entry each and the slightly wider ones are 2 entries.

    1. Oh darn, I thought I had posted twice. Now my math sucks too. Can I get some disability provisions for that? Now my one post counts as five and I get a big piece of pie. I sure hope it's pecan.

  6. Are we worried? Is this a trend? How does it compare with previous years? Are people busy?

I'm not sure what the purpose of this post is, other than to get me thinking that I will have to stop at the grocery store on the way home and buy a pie.

    1. We had a similar post in 2010, and I went through the posts taking out College Misery posts that were on behalf of other people and it broke the whole thing down really clearly. It's just people who don't have posting rights. If I recall, the breakdown was 3 unique posters per day for a month, just some of them posted through CM's official account.

But I'll try to make time to post more often.

  7. The best part is the royalties. In just two weeks, I earned enough to buy a short vacation to Disney World. Anywhere is better than staying at Miami U this weekend.

  8. Yes, I made the fucking chart. I put it up with intentions not even clear to me. It's scandalous and inciting. It's a harbinger of the end of things, it's a path to a new tomorrow. You'll notice it is centered, however, and I should get some credit for that. Cal would have made the fucking thing blurry!

    1. That wasn't a dig at you, BTW. I was honestly just wondering.

    2. Fab knows that...he's got the biggest heart of anyone I know. He doesn't take offense at much. He sometimes channels a tougher spirit to show folks he won't take any guff...

      Love ya, Fab.

There are still readers here who don't know Fab's gender, by the way, which tickles me.

    3. Cal totally would have made it blurry. Then all the comments would have been "What the fuck is this chart??"

    4. I'd have put it on the left and let you people deal with it.

  9. I was alarmed at how my posting had dominated the page. It was not my intention. The chart surprised me and thought it might surprise others. Nothing was intended except, "Sorry, I've been hogging the space."

It's well known I've always wanted the page to be busier, have more traffic, etc. But I'm trying to accept things as they are. The hits have been going down fairly steadily since the first year, and I've been trying to keep the page active as a way to keep and attract readers. That's just me. Nearly everyone who goes on the record about this thinks it's foolish, Cal included - who truly has been a terrific help to me throughout the life of the page.

I should be having a nice slice of pie (and a glass of beer) instead of worrying about a blog.

    1. The hits are declining, really? I thought the stats showed fairly steady views.

    2. "I should be having a nice slice of pie (and a glass of beer) instead of worrying about a blog."

Well, yes, probably (but does beer go with pie? I wouldn't know, since I don't much like beer in the first place). But we appreciate that someone takes the time to worry. Like Monkey, I feel that the CM-posed material displays some variety. I only start worrying (and feeling that I ought to come up with something to post) when the page is dominated by CM-posted material from elsewhere on the internet (though that sometimes generates good discussion, too, and can serve as a catalyst for discussion among people who are still here, but too tired/busy/etc. to start a conversation themselves).

Finally, I wonder what the connection between hits and fresh material is? I can imagine scenarios in which people keep checking back (albeit probably from the same computer) because they want to see something new, and the itch hasn't been scratched. It's that intermittent-reinforcement thing that makes the internet (and slot machines) so addictive.

    3. Fresh material drives the hits. We had one of the biggest post days in history yesterday - my selfish guilt trip, and all that. And the late day hits were spectacular, about 900 hits an hour from 9-midnight.

I do post outside articles on days when there's been no new posts because the law of blogs is, people don't come back to static blogs. I know there are CM readers who disagree with me about this, and I just ask that you learn to live with me as I try to learn to live with you.

I want the page to be fresh so when folks come, they understand it's active and worth visiting.

    4. Here's a stat that might be interesting to ponder. RYS, which ended officially in June of 2010, has been getting about 12,000 hits a month for the past 22 months.

Of course I did leave about 1000 posts up, and most of them are pretty interesting and focused on the kinds of topics RYS/CM traffic in.

  10. For as long as I've been reading CM - the beginning, thank you - some readers are always annoyed at the stats and so on. I sort of like stats, the geeky nature of the numbers and so on, but I'm on record as not believing our page has as many real visitors as the numbers show. I may be entirely wrong about that, and have no evidence why anyone would fudge the numbers.

I've always read Cal and others talk about how much mail RYS got, but then there was no other way to get stuff on the page except through them. I liked when Ben did some stats on the most popular posts and most commented ones and so on.

I thought the chart was surprising, because it doesn't feel like "the moderator" is really that big of a feature on the page. I mean I know it's Fab and all, but I don't feel like his presence is too much.

However, that pie tin is off center, man, so Cal needs to brush up on Photoshop. Not that I could do it any better, but, what am I paying for?!? :)

    1. The crust is the most difficult part. I swear, one of the ways I'll make a million bucks is to sell homemade-looking crusts with uneven edges in the grocery store.

    2. I think many of us assume that the number of "unique visitors" should, in fact, be divided by two (or perhaps 3) to account for visits from both home and school connections (and perhaps smartphones as well. In addition, adjuncts working at multiple schools -- assuming they actually have offices with computers and time to use them -- might up the numbers). Beyond that, I assume the statistics are accurate (and that most websites would experience a similar phenomenon).

The pie tin is off center, but the pie tin + fork image is centered. I think it's a matter of judgment/taste rather than photoshop skills.

  11. Huh, well. Things to ponder. Or not, and eat pie.
