Rules of Misery.

We have been unsuccessful in getting some readers to follow one of the simpler rules of misery: " Do not post anonymously or with 'non-names' like Nobody, No One, Anonymous Prof, etc."

Two different readers persist, and we've now asked each twice to pick a "real" pseudonymous name.

We'd love to have your input, but we're not prepared to allow "anonymous" names.

  1. Thank you for your persistence on this issue. Anonymous or anonymous-ish names only confuse the sense of community here. I think that's one thing we've done very well, so it makes sense to preserve it.

Of course, by preserving that community with well-thought-out rules, you are neglecting your #1 job of ruining the page, so way to fail there.

  2. Monkey nailed it. Unless your goal really is to kill the page (in which case you're all hopelessly incompetent, or deeply conflicted, or something else dysfunctional), the enforcement of consistent, easily identifiable and distinguishable pseudonyms is a key part of maintaining the balance between anonymity/privacy/deniability/non-google-ability or whatever it is many of us are aiming for and accountability to the community. It's one the reasons this place actually does feel like, and function as, a community (and a pretty darn functional one at that given that we're all a bunch of self-identified malcontents).

Besides, haven't these people got any imagination? Anonymous and variants are so, so overused, and so boring. Choosing an appropriate pseudonym is an art, and should be a pleasure. Somehow I don't think that anyone who can't be bothered with that first step is really interested in participating in any substantial way.

    1. I think this semi-anonymous people are used to other blogs where the default setting for commenters is "anonymous" or "guest"....if you remember Nando* of "Third Tier Reality", 90 percent of his commenters are nameless because that's how his Blogspot site is set up.

I think there are some people who want to make their comments on a specific post and never come back, so they just come up with lazy names. What I'm waiting for is a raft of commenters with filthy names....when we have "Cocksucker Jones" and "Mary, our Whore of Grace (and Jizzbuckets)" I think we will finally be going somewhere.

      * I still think we as a site were hard on Nando; I still comment on his site, but he never replies to anything I write.

  3. I think the anonymouses are lacking in creativity. They lose participation points for the day.
