    If it keeps one person from pursuing a Ph.D. that is mostly useful to get an adjunct job. . .

    I feel for adjuncts, and I know life is hard out in the real world for everyone. But when the first anecdote invokes patriarchy I tend to close my broswer and open up spider solitaire.
