While I hope Terry did just get tenure, I read the cartoon somewhat differently: the guy starts off young-ish but sticks around forever, well into decrepitude.
Terry P is a shit disturber, a crank as we used to say in the goon old days. He's an old fucker like me, though, and I'm 90% sure long tenured. I read the comic as a play on how fast the damn career can go. Work all that time for something, and then you're, well, pissing in your own pants. Cannot beat the original artwork either!!! Though I believe the left side eyeball belongs to NASA and that Fab will likely receive a cease and desist order posthaste.
Hey; there's even a reference to Emerson (deliberate or not; I have to admit I'd forgotten about this sketch until I googled "transparent eyeball" to check whether the reference was, indeed, in "Nature," but I'm pretty sure I've seen it before, and there's quite a close resemblance, which makes me think it might just be deliberate). Nice!
And you may remember them better than I apparently do mine. I can think of at least one professor with a significant role in my educational career who would be horrified that I had to double-check the reference. He's emeritus these days, though, so I think my degree is safe.
Terry? Did you really just get tenure? Congrats!
ReplyDeleteGood news!

DeleteIn relative terms, the time between wearing a diaper and achieving tenure is infinitely longer than that between tenure and forgetting to wear pants.

ReplyDeleteI was just going for the swiftness of the decline...Howdy everyone. I'm still on my meds. Everything is copacetic!
ReplyDeleteThe cataract on Dr. Eyeball in the second panel is a nice touch...
ReplyDeleteThus will General Motors' premium brand never shake its image as an old people's car.
