Faculty Incivility.

My campus had a visit two years by Darla Twale, the author of the amazing and somewhat terrifying book called Faculty Incivility: The Rise of the Academic Bully Culture.

In that book, Twale posits the notion that schoolyard bullies eventually grow up and end up in the workplace, even in academe.

Some of my colleagues thought the anecdotes that dot the book were excessive and hyperbolic. Of course it was our campus bullies who thought this!

  1. My usually polite SLAC distributed copies of this book to all departments last year. We took turns "checking" it out of the departmental library - at least those of us who wanted to read it.

When I got it, one of my dear colleagues had written "BULLSHIT" largely in permanent marker on the table of contents page!

  2. The irony of a departmental library book on incivility being defaced by a member of the same department is priceless. And an excellent example of faculty incivility.

  4. Wow...so couple this book with Queen Bees and Wannabes, and I think I now understand most of the bourgeois women I've encountered in my academic career...
