Technical Query

Okay, I'm new here and posted a few comments last week from work but haven't been able to post any from home. The "Help" function isn't helping with this, and I'd rather embarrass myself here than bug Fab with a lame email.

Can any of you frequent posters and commenters help, please? I'm signed in to my Google account, and have selected "Google Account" from the "Comment As" menu. I've typed maybe 5 different pithy, witty, perfectly spelled and punctuated and vitally important comments to various posts (and I have a bridge to sell), but whether I click "Preview" or "Post", I just go back to the page with previous comments and a blank "Post a Comment" form.

The only difference between home and work is that I'm using Firefox at home and Explorer at work.

What am I doing wrong?

  1. I have no trouble with Firefox but I'm on a Mac, which I gather you aren't (since Explorer hasn't been supported on Mac for several years now). I suspect it's not Firefox, but you could try downloading Explorer at home and trying to post with it, just to make sure.

  2. I use Chrome, and I've never had a problem with it. If you're not up for the IE "experience," try Chrome.

  3. Hi. There was one other reader who had the same problem and I was never able to help her solve that problem. I was never able to duplicate the error.

I think it's important that you've been able to comment from work, which means it's likely something to do with a difference between your home setup and work. I know that's not very helpful, but it's all I got.

I, too, use Chrome for everything and find I have far fewer problems than when I used to use IE.

    Good luck,
    Fab

  4. I'm using Firefox under Win7 right now. I'd bet it's your privacy settings; you might be disabling a bit of script that makes things work properly.

  5. What introvert prof said-- are you blocking scripts of some sort? NoScript or AdBlock or some FF add on like that?

  6. I get the same problem using Firefox on my mac. I have to use Safari, and I find it works better if I sign in first, rather than trying to use the "comment as" dropdown.

I SUSPECT that the problem may have something to do with switching google accounts (I have several, for various nefarious purposes), although I do also have Adblock on Firefox, so that might be the culprit.

Using a different browser will definitely cure it.

  7. I will echo what others have said. You might also have a much higer privacy setting on your home browswer. When I disabled cookies in Chrome, I couldn't even SEE Facebook or Blogger, let alone post. Resetting to default didn't work; I had to uninstall and reinstall to fix the problem. Now I just delete cookies regularly.

  8. I lurve Firefox and its Ad-block. Surfing without ads is just a completely internet experience. But I'm able to post just fine. I highly suspect a script blocker.

  9. A script blocker seems likely to me too. I use firefox with "adblock plus" on a mac and I can post just fine. But like Whatladder I often have to sign in to blogger again before being able to post.

  10. I am eternally grateful to those of you who suggested AdBlock. I just installed it and yay. Pages load so much faster and the eyeball clutter is vastly reduced. Plus, I can still comment with Firefox and a Mac.

  11. i had to warn students that i use adblock with chrome, adblockplus with firefox...this meant if i link to a site, i don't know if it's full of ads. (until i try to look at it on campus, where i can't change the software on lab computers.)
