It's so important to have the information just out there and available. More they know about STDs, the fewer crying reports I get about HPV and the risk of cervial cancer causing them to miss class.
I've only heard one such excuse. A young woman showed up after class, with her boyfriend, both looking scared, and said that she'd had to take Plan B after the failure of their usual contraceptive method (I assume it broke) and she'd throwing up all night and this morning in consequence, and was that an okay reason to have missed the quiz, and here was the Plan B receipt (date helpfully circled) to prove the story. I didn't think they were likely to have made it up; they were both white as a sheet.
But man, I remember my own undergrad days, when there was no Plan B, and "failure of the usual contraceptive method" was real reason to be white as a sheet - not that one would ever have told a prof or used it as a reason to miss a quiz.
At least the campus pharmacy stocks Plan B and sells it over the counter in my area, and so does the campus health centre, and there are flyers up all over the place. I know lots of areas aren't so lucky.
Wait a minute? I'm responsible for their sexual health as well? It isn't enough that we offer sports and meals and kindergartens and clubs and activities and orientations and church and whatnot?
I'll be glad to have words with Dr. Randy not to be sleeping with the students, but I am just not getting into what they do in their bed-bug ridden little squats with each other.
@Suzy...I'm not responsible for it, but I do have to listen to a lot of Americans whinging about Africans having irresponsible sex, so I try and point out (when I can) that Americans are quite good at giving one another what we used to call "social diseases" as well.
But if you do look at STDs and stuff like that, college campuses are chock-full of 'em...as I am fond of telling the randy little goats.

ReplyDelete"I couldn't come to class because boyfriend's condom broke," is an actual line I've heard.
ReplyDeleteI may ask in the future, "Was it a Trojan, dear?"
"Alabama scrapes the bottom?" I wouldn't guess that Alabama liked that sort of thing.
