Whip My Hair
by Ronald M. Jackson.
perf: Willow Smith
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (just whip it)
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (whip it real good)
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth
Hop about the bed turn my swag on
Pay no attention to them haters cuz we whip em off
and we ain't doing nothing wrong
so don't tell me nothing, i'm just tryna have fun
so keep the party jumping
so whats up (yea)
And I'll be doing what to do
we turn our back
and whip our hair and just shake them off
shake them off, shake them off, shake them off
Don't let haters keep me off my grind
Keep my head up i know I'll be fine
Keep fighting until i get there
When i'm down and i feel like giving up i think again
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (just whip it)
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (whip it real good)
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (just whip it)
I whip my hair back and forth

I'ma get more shine in a little bit
Soon as i hit the stage applause im hearing it
whether its black stars black hearts im feeling it
but can't none of them whip it like i do
I, i gets it in mmmm yea i go hard
when they see me pull up i whip it real hard

I, for one, am happy you posted the entire God damned thing. (Really, I mean. Long day. It amused me.)

ReplyDeleteAnd yes, that picture of the eggplants in the Blackberry ad is weirdly pervy.
Ah, WhatLadder, great minds think alike and contemporaneously.
ReplyDeleteI blame Scientology....
ReplyDeleteI'm not really seeing how it's more of a decay of civilization than pop music in general for the last, eh, 50 years* or so. It's no less sophisticated than, say, "Stayin' Alive."
ReplyDelete* non-scientific figure
I hate to tell you, but Western Civilization was done for when Project Apollo was cancelled, in 1972. Nixon and Kissinger were still running the country. This was years before "Stayin' Alive.
ReplyDeleteI heart Bruce. I don't get the eggplant comment. This song is horrible. The Plague doesn't make AIDS any less terrible. 33 year old songs don't make this any better. Springsteen wrote a bad song once. It was called The Angel.
ReplyDeleteBut does she whip her hair?
ReplyDeleteI'm going to pretend that Schmitty is making a joke.
ReplyDelete...You see, because Will Smith (her father) is in Scientology.
ReplyDeleteGet it now?
The first time I heard this, I thought there was some problem with the cd or something. My kids got a big kick out of that. Do they even have such a thing as a "skip" anymore? I guess not....
ReplyDeleteDarla, I am concerned about your ear!
@Eating Low Salt, I'm afraid not. I'm an ignorant community college snowflake and you'll have to educate me! :B
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who cares that this kid is 9 years old and being encouraged to dance like a hoochie-mama?
ReplyDeleteFrog and Toad:
ReplyDeleteActually, I gotta disagree here: she's not. Take it from a dance geek. The choreo they are using is drawn from late eighties hip-hop and from step teams, much of which is pretty gender-neutral in its body language. (Her long-haired hair-whipping scenes with the paint, for example, echo nothing so much as the lead singer of In Living Color, who was emphatically a man.) Her clothing, thought bright and spangly, is also relatively modest throughout, covering her pretty thoroughly and also fairly loosely, again with a kind of late-eighties androgeny to the design. The most feminine/sexy markers on her are the sparkles on her eyes and mouth, and her manicure.
What she is *not* doing that I kind of expected given your comment: any shoulder-shimmies or hip-shimmies that would emphasize adult female secondary sexual characteristics the shaking thereof. Any groin-grabbing. Any exposure of midriff or thigh, or display of tightly-clothed booty. The hair-whipping may sound kinda Beyonce in concept, but if you watch, kids of all genders (and hair textures) are included in the choreography with that hair-whipping movements -- and again, the movement is definitively strong, and almost punk-y, in places.
Do I think it's awesome to make a pop star out of a child? No, I think that seems like a bad idea, given the track record of child pop stars. But this is, choreography-wise, a long way removed from Brit-Brit and Miley. In fact, I'd argue that it's a lot better than their hoochie-mama acts, because hip-hop and step, as dance forms, have some serious artistic depth that I don't personally associate with the video for "Toxic."
Just reading those lyrics give me whiplash.
ReplyDeleteSome perspective for those of us who remember the disco era: these lyrics are almost profound, compared to Silver Convention's Get Up and Boogie.
ReplyDeleteI never laughed so hard in my life as when Steve Allen did a dramatic reading of those lyrics.
OK, garrity, I'm convinced. Thanks for the analysis, seriously.
ReplyDeleteI like the Muppets version better, but that probably dates me more than anything else.
I think some of the best lyrics are in Daft Punk's Around the World. I am still trying to memorize all the lyrics.
