I've gone to my classes this week with Yaro's latest post in mind. He's reminded me that some day, I'll miss this, and that even now, I really enjoy what I do.
I'm at a CC, so our first priority is teaching, then service, and if there's time, research and publishing. Few of us publish. Most of us spend our time either teaching, or trying to find ways to improve our teaching. With the exception of a few, I am fortunate to work with colleagues who are passionate about being in the classroom.
So far, my students have been alert and respectful. Many of them have already shown signs of promise. I feel energized and excited about going to campus.
While I know there will be a fair share of misery to deal with this term (isn't there always?), I am going to attempt approaching every week, every class, every student, with the same attitude as Yaro presented me with this week. Maybe I'll find there is a little less misery to be had this Spring.
I think Mesto is right. I find myself going into class sometime expecting the worst...and the worst appears.
ReplyDeleteI've toughened a couple of my policies this semester about final work that gets turned in. I fretted it would be a problem, that there'd complaints.
But, aside from a couple of missed attempts by students, everyone is doing what I asked. I go in, expecting the best - as much as I can - and they meet me at that point.
I must say, my first impressions have been (and usually are) pretty positive, too. Hearing and/or reading the range of their interests when they introduce themselves is always fascinating, and inspiring. And the research project ideas proposed by the eager beavers (I'll get the assignment up soon, really, guys. You've got another paper to write before we start that one.) are a bit broad, but show real intellectual curiosity.
ReplyDeleteOf course, I did get an email from a student in one of my DL sections asking where and when the class was meeting, because he couldn't find the information on the registrar's site. But I digress.
Oh yes, let's all be gentle.
ReplyDeleteSee how long it lasts.
I was Yaro-inspired for a class on Monday and things (discussion, questions) went awfully well. Some even thought my humor was funny...
ReplyDeleteAh..... but how long it lasts will be another thing. There's always tonight's section!
