The Academic Haiku.

Oh, I love the academic haiku, the form which was defined back in the RYS days as "short, enigmatic free verse about academic matters, occasionally referencing seasons, nature, and margaritas."

Nothing would make me happier than to see this treasured item return once a week or so here at CM. Here are some past faves from the time before time. I wrote the best one myself, but I'll be damned if I can remember which one it was:

  1. "Freddie" and "Goodbye" are truly great. Thanks for the reminder.

  2. I'd swear one of the ones in the collection is by Greta. Distinguishing (and perhaps disqualifying) characteristic: it's good. Greta knows her way around an enjambment (and a few other tricks of prosody as well).

I notice that there was also one limerick. That actually strikes me as a form well-suited to our mission -- and it's easier to write.

But I'm not sure that I'm brave enough to try either.
