Flake, Snowflakes, Flake!

I have had classes cancelled for snow in the past—that’s a common occurrence here. I live in one of the higher elevations, so I get more than my fair share of white stuff.

But now….I’m debating on cancelling this evening’s class for another version of precipitation—namely rain and flooding. Guess the misery just hit me right between the eyes today, and it’s barely the start of the semester….but last week’s class had a slightly bizarre incident, so it just must be rearing its head early.

I feel like a wimp, but major roadways and many minor ones are closed. Five hours to make a decision, and I just want to pull the plug. Why? Maybe because my basement is flooding for the second time in as many weeks—a puddle winked evilly at me earlier this morning when I ventured down there.

For once, I want the snowflakes to flake out on me and send me a virtual storm of whiny emails detailing why they can’t make it to class, so I can have justification….flake, snowflakes, flake!!!!

  1. I hear you, AA. This relentless onslaught of rain is beginning to cause real problems here in Surlytown, too. In addition to the usual fall stress, I now have to deal with a flooded basement, broken water pump, a house that smells like damp cat litter, flooded roads, late students, and the general malaise that comes from two straight weeks of steady, crazy levels of rain, with no relief in the near future. I don't blame you for wanting a break!

  2. I'm betting that your campus will cancel classes - probably by 2pm local time or so. That's how the pattern usually goes, at least on my campus, for evening classes.

    Good luck, and stay safe!

  3. If you're not sure you can get there *and back* safely, don't hesitate to cancel (assuming you won't face repercussions from your institution). Flooding (flash and otherwise) is every bit as dangerous as hurricanes, earthquakes, etc., it just doesn't have as good a publicity team.

  4. P.S. Can you tell us about the slightly bizarre incident, or is it too potentially identifying? You've whetted my curiosity.

  5. @Ancillary Adjunct
This is your chance; attach a small outboard motor to a one-person kayak, and sail to Mexico and Freedom. Or float down to Cuba for some cheap thrills.

  6. So ... inquiring minds want to know. Did they cancel class for tonight?

  7. @Surly--I'm dealing with some of the same issues and hating every minute of it. Hopefully all your flood-related issues will clear up soon. Clara, I'm too dedicated. They didn't cancel and in I went. Cassandra, the bizarre incident was I asked all the students to introduce themselves and one refused to speak. Finally, I gave up and continued down the line, but the rest of the students even gave him odd looks. When class was over, he bolted out the door first. I have no memo from our testing agency stating he's mute so he's either painfully shy or I don't know what. On the other hand,I saw him taking notes during class today. I can't figure it out. EMH, no exam cancellation, but since they only have a final, and quizzes in the interim to reinforce the material, there's still time for a blizzard worthy of Hades by then.....after all, we've had so much bizarre weather lately!
