Leslie.

Leslie K. is taking over the blog indefinitely. I have had such a blast here at College Misery, and I will check in periodically.

As you know, she has a long history of running her own blog, and has logged a good amount of time here as well.

My schedule does not permit me the kind of time I think is necessary to stay on. But I will definitely be a reader.

My thanks,
Fab

Fab's direct email is here. I have forwarded all the notes that have come in so far.

  1. Fab! Leaving! I can hardly believe it...

Thanks for the blood, sweat and tears you've poured into CM. Your efforts have not been in vain, and despite all manner of reports the blog looks to be thriving. Whatever you're doing, wherever you're going, you have my best wishes.

  2. Oh, what sadness. Well, so long as Fab remains a reader and active commenter, I'll be happy. Don't disappear into the darkness!

And Leslie, Welcome back! Hope the Real Goddamned Mail doesn't get you down. xo

  3. Sorry to lose your guidance, Fab. Like everyone else, I want to thank you for all your work. Even if we don't say so very often, we really appreciate it. I often say to the spousal unit that this blog helps keep me sane.

Leslie, good to have you back on. [serious] Good luck [/serious]. I fear you'll need it [grin].

  4. All kidding aside, I hope it's clear how much Fab worked on the page, and how seriously he took the responsibility to make the page work for as many people as possible, even jackasses - at times.

As a sort of unofficial counselor, I fielded (happily) scores of phone calls and hundreds of emails looking for advice. (I know he did this with Leslie K and others he came to know.)

I can say without hesitation that Fab's a good man, an honest man, and someone I'd love to have on my side in a Scrabble tourney, bar fight, or tennis match.

  5. Fab is a lovely, lovely man.

And in keeping with the ethos of all RYS/CM mods, I will endeavor to kill the page with flair and alacrity.

  6. Hey Fab, you were fantastic to work with, both wise and fair. Hope you're enjoying an adult beverage right this moment.

  7. Bless you, Fab, and thanks for all the work you put in. Leslie, welcome to hell. BWAAAA-HAHAHAHAHAHA.

  8. Can I say this without seeming too odd? I'm one of those people who correspond a lot with the mods via email. I don't know. I just like it. Fab is a primo correspondent and a sweet man. I will miss his steady hand on the ship.

But Leslie! What a great thing for you to come back to us. Good luck to Fab on his way out, and hooray for Leslie K as she re-engages.

  9. Congratulations Fab to your promotion to the status of regular correspondent. You can now join the rest of us as we log in under several aliases and send annoying requests to the moderator.

  10. Wait. I thought Fab WAS Leslie K. And Ben and Cal and many others.

This news is freaking me out.

  11. We will miss you Fab, and appreciate all you have done. Leslie, I am worried for you and hope the abuse does not get you down! Thanks so much for taking this on. This blog keeps ME sane too!

  14. 40 emails so far! And all of these comments. You're so kind.

And to answer the number one question, I'm not leaving for any terrible reason! No illness. No psychiatric stay in my future. No problem with painkillers. No unusual fondness for the alpacas in my care. (Thanks for the terrible image, Rutabaga Ralph.)

It's just a time crunch with personal and professional schedules.

I love you, Leslie... Have fun.

    XOXO
    Fab

    1. Well, that's disappointing. I was hoping Katie from Kalamazoo had sued you for libel.

    2. That was actually my first thought as well.

Except Katie's lawyers are probably all cats.

    3. I cannot stop laughing at the image of Katie's avatar surrounded by cats in lawyer suits. All probably her former students!

  15. Dearest Fabio. I am heartily saddened to hear that you shall not be our grand leader any longer. That rascal Calico sent me an email suggesting I check the page today to learn of your departure.

What kindness you always showed me, allowing me to share the small threads of lessons I've unraveled over these years.

And your lovely visit to me this past spring on that terribly gray day is a fond memory. Were the weather as sunny as our conversation.

But the hours you kept, dear man! Surely the respite from those machinations will allow more time for the small universe of your own life.

Enjoy it, and the ones you love.

It is I, of course, your friend,
    Yaro

  18. Hi Leslie K! Thanks for coming back to moderating. :o)

  19. Question: Is this excellent notebook paper background a final goodbye from Fab or a signal for things to come from Leslie K?

    Because I love it.

  20. I'm relieved to hear the reasons are not dire. Because I enjoy this place so much, I always feel a bit guilty at indications of how much work it creates for the RGMs. I'd hate to think that some combination of dealing with trolls and dealing with people who genuinely (vociferously, at length) wish the best for the page had driven you over the cliff, or to a padded cell, or rehab, or both. I hope at least some of the personal and professional obligations bring a sense of satisfaction and/or accomplishment (and that you feel some satisfaction and sense of accomplishment at what you've built here; CM may be something of a loose, baggy, shambling, occasionally clumsy monster, but it is at heart a friendly, well-intentioned one, and does far more good than harm, I'm convinced).

I'm delighted to see Leslie K more prominently in our midst. She runs a tight but fair ship (with the occasional interesting zigzag to keep things lively), and I appreciate that.

And any event which brings Yaro even briefly out of the woodwork is, to my mind, an at least partly positive one. Hi, Yaro! Hope you're enjoying retirement.

    1. Thanks for the nice note, Cassandra, and everyone. I'm truly touched.

I exhausted myself, not the page, not you lovely folks. I spent more time and energy on it for my own reasons, and it got to be - I hate to say this - a bit of a chore.

That's no good. And I had a new project at the college come up and it was like, "Well, maybe I need to switch horses for a bit."

Plus my family has added a surprising new grandbaby - don't ask. And suddenly we are a houseful of noise and joy and that, too, is something I want to spend more time with.

But I will be around. I mean, the misery doesn't end, right? Right? Except in college heaven somewhere?

    2. Well, I won't ask, but I will say "congratulations" on the arrival of the grandbaby. Surprising or not, it sounds like (s)he is being well and lovingly welcomed, which is a positive thing for all involved (and, yes, definitely a thing to want to be involved with). I hope the new project at the college also brings joys, expected and un-.
