I Am Baffled, No I'm Not.

From my student evals:

  • I went to his office twice and each time his door was open but he was nowhere to be found.
  • I woudnt have taken it if I'd known that was so much reading.
  • Okay. But he can be really judgemental.
  • I tried to get along but he wouldn't work with me.
  • Just because he's the teacher doesn't mean he gets to make all the rules.
  • Handouts were never stapled or hole punched.
  • I think he should try to give more warning about the big tests.

  1. I remember whiny nonsense like that in my evaluations shortly after I started my teaching job over 20 years ago. I guess some things don't change.

  3. I would say almost all the issues we have with students come down to the fact that many of our students believe this: "Just because he's the teacher doesn't mean he gets to make all the rules."

Yes, it does. That is exactly what it means.

  4. I think you need to put some of these sentences into your syllabus!

"I do not staple or hole-punch the hand-outs. That is your job."

"I'm the teacher, here are the rules."

"There will be lots of reading."

    "There will be big tests."

In fact, that could be your next whole syllabus!

Hahahahahahahaha. Love those evals! (/maniacal laughing)

  5. I feel pretty lucky to have the students that I get. You people seem like you deal with a lot of nightmares. That's not to say I don't get my share of bad students, but the vast majority are well-behaved and appreciative.

  6. Goddamned CM evals:

I emailed Leslie K twice but she didn't reply within 3 minutes.

I wouldnt have joined the CM community if I'd known that was so much reading. Read read read. So many posts and comments. It's exhausting.

Okay. But Leslie K can be really judgemental.

I tried to get along but she wouldn't do what I wanted her to do.

Just becauze she's the RGM doesn't mean she gets to make all the rules.... Um.

Comments and posts were never stapled or hole punched.

I think Leslie K should try to give more warning before there'z a big dramatic blow-up. I always miss all the interesting stuff because I'm teaching all day.

    No fair!

    1. Maybe you need a new advisor?
Is that a shot at me? As the Resident CM Advisor-type person, I think that's a shot at me...

  7. Sometimes their "praise" is just as depressing:

"Kept me awake the entire hour and forty-five minutes."

"Not as completely useless as my other GE classes."

"This class wasn't bad, but it just really sucks to have to read so much."

  8. "I loved having her for a teacher, even tho all the other students hated her!"

  9. I remember asking one student, upon reviewing her homework, if she spent 10 minutes on it. She was indignant, and said -- I spent a whole hour! For a class that requires 10-15 hours of out-of-class time. Give 'em enough rope...
