  4. Good! Now start looking for another job; there will never be a better time.

Seriously--do you like where you live? If not, you have a two year window, maybe five. After that, it pretty much becomes a life sentence.

That's the downside of tenure: after a certain age, most people are completely unhirable. Adminicritters know that, of course.

  5. Wayworn, congratulations! I hope it is a job you love, and that inspires you though the misery may occasionally rear its ugly head. What a great way to end the week.

  10. Congrats, WW! Now you can give your students and administration hell, and there's not much they can do to you that doesn't hurt them more.

    1. I'd be careful with that. Have you read your faculty manual lately? Plenty of ways to deal with troublemakers, strictly by the book. Tenure is not what it used to be.

    2. Congratulations, WW!

And stop pissing in the champagne, Peter K. Or at least save it a week. WTF?

  11. Congratulations! Use the power (such as it is) well (and yes, from everything I hear, you need to practice saying "no" to at least every other request to do committee work. But presumably that won't happen until Monday at the earliest, so celebrate this weekend).

  14. Way to go! Now you get to be a mentor to all the up-and-coming faculty...oh, wait, most places don't hire enough full-time faculty, and when they do, they have robo-mentor programs in place to keep them away from the dangerous minds already tenured.

Enjoy yourself--you've earned it, in all seriousness!
