Some Beach...

Hello to all of my fellow CM'rs! I send my greetings from the Administration Building of an empty campus in Podunk, Nowhere. For all you faculty types, I hope that you are enjoying your much deserved Spring Breaks. You have certainly earned it, and then some. I hope the beer is cold, the margaritas have little umbrellas, and that the sun and companionship is warm.

I'm a long time RYS and CM lurker. I even remembered to include in a crappy graphic!  I have seen stuff. I wouldn't recommend all of it. I've worn a lot of hats in my time. I was a snowflake, student assistant, gradflake, TA, adjunct, and now have turned to the dark side of the Force, and have returned to the ranks of full-time junior university administration. I assess stuff. You know, things. Yep I'm THAT person.  Which means that while you are hopefully on a warm beach, I'm here in my office overlooking an empty campus, dreaming of a cold beverage and warm sand. At least parking was a breeze today...

Cheers!

  1. Oh dear. The graphic is far too un-blurry! But love your intro. Welcome and have fun. And not all of us are on beaches. I'm painting a basement and the fumes are making me miss my grimy office at school.

  2. Welcome, TK. It will be good to have your perspective on here. I wish we were on Spring Break, too, but alas, the quarter system means we wait a while...

  3. Welcome!

Spring break is the second busiest week of my semester; final exam week is the king of that. I take in so many papers just before the break that I send up spending the entire week in t-shirt and shorts, crosslegged on the couch grading and grading and grading.

Oh, TK421? Can I call you Tucker. Shitfire, TK421 is NOT a name. Is it a non-name, like in the rules?

I think a name is something I can say out loud without thinking I was an actor on the SyFy channel.

    Tucker, how about that?

  4. Hmmm...and here I thought I was being creative, with my homage to the only Stormtrooper from the movies to get a name. But you can call me Tucker, if you like!

    1. whoops, never knew the reference. I like it. if it had been a storm trooper in a Ryan Gosling movie, I'd have known it...

    2. @Darla: But you got the sci-fi reference, so that's pretty good! Now, for me, if only Ryan Gosling would star in a big summer popcorn sci-fi movie. Good thing theaters have air conditioning.

@TK-421: "the only Stormtrooper from the movies to get a name" Right, why didn't I realize that before?

      Welcome!

    1. Now when people ask, "TK-421, why aren't you at your post?" you can tell them that you are at your post.

  6. TK, welcome! An administrator, huh?

A few years ago my department was wondering whether to do a national search for a Chair, or go local. So we had a meeting, and one of my colleagues said he would do it.

We're about the same age, so from the back of the room I asked: "Hey, why do you want to be department head?" On the spot, he made something up, suitably generic. Sadly for me, he did become chair.

So I'm curious, TK. What made you decide to go into academic administration?

    1. It's a long story, and it's too early to be drinking that much. To make it short, I fell into it by accident. I needed a full time job while finishing up my MA, and I don't really know how to do anything but work at a university. There was an open position on my campus in the assessment office and I got the job.

Somewhere along the line I figgured out that I was actually pretty good at this assessment stuff, and shockingly I actually enjoyed it. I get to work with faculty and staff from around the entire University. From the President to the guys over in grounds and maintenance. So in that sense it is very rewarding.

I know that administration can be it's a thankless task, assessment in particular. And I know I will never be the favorite person on campus, but someone has to do it. Might as well be me!

    2. Thanks TK. Be sure to take notes, this could be material for a good novel someday. You know, like Charlotte Simmons .

  7. Welcome (from another proffie who is on spring break, but definitely not at the beach; I might walk by a muddy riverbank later today, but I'm sure as heck not going swimming)! I consider going over to the dark side periodically myself, so I'd love to hear your story sometime.
