A New Game: Guess the Department. No Fair Using The Google.

Extra points for justifying your answer or showing your work.

  1. Dept of "Some of us knew about today's photo shoot and dressed for it, but others didn't" at the
College of slightly worrying religion which only allows males to benefit from glasses?

  2. All 9 members of the Department of Camouflage?

    1. It appears that only one of the members has bothered to keep current with the field.

    2. It really shouldn't have taken me as long as it did to get it.

  3. The guy on the right has English all over him - my department - but I'm thinking Philosophy.

  4. At my joint, this would be the largest department, which would de-facto make it the Department of Planned Attrition Studies.

  5. Waaaaay too many women for Philosophy! I'm guessing English or a Romance language.

    1. My reaction too! One of my universities included staff in department photos--if one or more of those ladies (at least the lone cardigan wearer) are secretaries, it *might* work for philosophy.

    1. The gender balance suggests something related to caring professions. The faculty want to look professional because their students will become professionals in their field.

Maybe some "administration" major like public health or education.

  7. You'd never get that many jackets and ties in my department, even with an edict from the dean for school-photo day. So that, plus the Dinesh D'Souza lookalike on the left makes me think business. On the other hand, the jackets and ties are a little err.. mismatched, so something more academic than Bidness. Economics maybe?

As for why the woman in the middle is wearing gloves - I got nothing.

    1. Agreed. There's no way this is a science or math department. I'd agree: something business-y or professional-y.

  8. History.

In all my years in academia, I've never seen anyone wear a camel-hair jacket except myself.

I could say more, but it would be unwise. Suffice it to say that the demographics work, too.

  9. If everyone dressed up for the occasion then it throws things off, but what one chose to wear on Photo Day is also illuminating information. The two guys on the right make me think Dept of Religious Studies, but as others have noted for other disciplines, there are too many women for that to be realistic, based on the demographics I've witnessed myself. So, I'm going to go with Dept of English too.

  10. I'm pretty sure it's humanities of some sort (a category in which I include history, though my present institution doesn't). English is plausible (especially since some of them look vaguely familiar), as is History, or some sort of mixed foreign-languages department (Romance, or perhaps modern languages). Classics would be plausible except the department's way too large. Could be an interdisciplinary program: medieval studies, perhaps?

I think they *were* told to dress up (the styles of dress are too variable for a dress-"professionally"-every-day department), and I'm guessing the oldest woman is, indeed, a secretary/administrator (or perhaps a longtime adjunct or lecturer who covers the basic course. Now that I've said that, of course, she's going to turn out to be a leading scholar in her field, past president of the professional association, etc., etc.)

And yes, there seems to be someone missing behind the middle woman. Maybe they actually managed to fire someone who abused the power of his tenured post? And bricks background are easy to fill in via photoshop?

  11. Everybody gets 3 points for playing. And extra credit for all as well.

It's the Religion Department at Andrews U in Michigan.

    1. Hey. I didn't know about the assignment. And it's due on a Sunday. That's not fair.

It's not in the syllabus. (looking) Well, so it is. It's still not fair. I didn't read the syllabus until now.

I think I deserve a make-up assignment. I can identify a picture of the animal husbandry department at Northwestern College. Is tha-a-a-a-t good enough?

I'm going to the Dean. Cal, Terry's not being fair.

  13. I like this game!

Picking the first picture from an Adventist university may have made it a bit harder -- but, hey, all the better.

  14. I've been offline this weekend so I was too late to guess (I would have guessed a languages and literatures department of some kind, maybe German) but this was a good game. You should do it again RGM.

  15. I'd have guessed business at a very small college, since those suits on the guys on the left and middle are nice. I'd buy one myself, but if I wore it, everyone would ask what was wrong with me.

    1. I got that in Hawaii: wore a jacket to a meeting with visiting mainlanders (accreditors) and everyone asked if I had a job interview.

  16. Red Blazer is staff and White Sweater is an assistant prof?! Mind. Blown. Well, I guess we all learned a little something today.
