Both my president and my provost are still very fond of this definition of adjunct, and most of their statements of the subject imply that most of our adjuncts are moonlighting (or retired) professionals teaching specialized courses. This is, of course, not the case, and both the president and the provost have access to reams of institutional data, and seem quite capable at interpreting said data in other circumstances, so I suspect they're being deliberately obtuse in this case.
