A Thirsty Followup, Two Years Later

Hi everyone,

I'm Atrus, and about two years ago, as a wee undergrad, I posted a Thirsty about whether or not to go into librarianship.

I just wanted to tell you all that I'll be graduating in a week with my MLIS, and that although I'm still sending out job applications left and right, I know that I've chosen the right career path.

Thank you for all the advice that you gave me back then, especially you, Cassandra -- I ended up taking classes in Digital Humanities, data curation, and cataloging, and I think that your advice was one of the things that reinforced my decision to do so.

(And I'm still a regular reader of the Miz.)

  1. Artus,
Best of luck in all your future endeavors. I am so glad you have found something you love doing. It makes all the difference in the world.

  2. This is great - not only to hear from a long-time reader to but also read that our conversations on this page have made a difference. I think it was Fab Sun who mentioned how we appreciate follow-up posts. It brings closure.

  3. I'm not quite sure whether to be pleased or alarmed that my advice influenced your decision. At least "reinforced" sounds like you had other, better-qualified advisors, and at least it still seems like reasonably good advice two years later (hey, at least I didn't tell you to go all in for DH, because there are lots of jobs/money, or to prepare yourself to support faculty teaching MOOCs, because they're clearly the wave of the future, or something like that). In any case, congratulations; it does seem like there is still a need for information-management specialists, or whatever we end up calling librarians eventually, and, as Cindy says, the fact that you love doing it does make a major difference. Congratulations on your graduation, and best wishes for finding a job soon!
