Did anybody else watch Project Runway last night and have flashbacks to the very worst student snowflake behavior when [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS] melted down on the runway at judging? The highlights:
- But we really tried so hard, so you should keep that in mind (with obligatory tears).
- We're all really good, so you should keep that in mind.
- "I/We" really liked what we did, even though you (the judges) didn't, so you should keep that in mind.
- Later. . . it was all HIS fault because he's not as good as we are, so you should keep that in mind (or forget the rules and kick him off so none of the rest of us has to face the consequences of our bad decisions.)

DAMMIT, I have it on my Tivo and haven't watched it yet...I never thought to avert my eyes from a CM post. I stayed away from all the TV pages so I wouldn't ruin my Friday night ritual of popcorn, wine, chocolate and Tim Gunn!!!

ReplyDeleteBut I didn't give away the winner/loser. This all took place in the course of the judging.
And trust me, seeing the judging will be worth your wait, even if you know beforehand that something spectacular is going to happen.
Okay, I can live with that...that Gretchen needed a spanking, so I can't wait...I'll try not to get drunk before it happens!

ReplyDeleteMinute to Win It: "We can do this if we just try!"
America's Got Talent: "This is our only chance to succeed at {insert questionable talent here}, so we deserve this opportunity more than all the other contestants."
Dancing with the Stars: "I'm not a dancer, so I hope you take that into consideration when you vote. I know I can do better next week!"
American Idol: (at the try-outs) "You don't know what yer talkin' 'bout. You know I'm good!"
(later during semifinals) "You should vote for me because I've had such a hard life and you can see I'm really improving!"
HGTV's Next Design Star: "Well, X wasn't doing anything but building furniture, so I think X should be voted off because X isn't a good designer."
It's a form of popular argumentation wherein evidence is replaced with pathos. So, are our students a symptom of the rise of this sort of non-logical thinking? Or is their acceptance of it just promoting this paradigm to the culture at large?
(I'd say both...it's chicken & egg thinking.)
Does Gretchen remind anyone else of that student you get in class who wants to be the prof? All that commenting on other people's work and reminding people about the rules just gave me horrible deja vu.

And people wonder why I never assign group work. THIS IS WHY, ASSHOLES! THIS IS WHY!

Heh, last semester I ran astronomy labs on Monday and Tuesday nights, and some girl actually appeared to take pity on me, that I never got to watch "American Idol." Good thing I never told her that I never wanted to watch it in the first place...
