WTH CM?

I leave for four days. Four. And the compound goes at each other, again?

Know why I was gone so long? Job interview. On campus.

The folks at each other's throats need to walk a mile in the other's shoes. No. Scratch that. They need to walk a mile in my shoes. Heels. The only things that match the interview suit. Enjoy the blood blisters too. My feet are torn up, but I nailed that interview.

To come back to the compound in a war zone, well, that just takes the high of the victory down a notch.

Play nicely.  EVERYONE.

FOUR days. I'm gone for four fucking days.

  1. First of all, congrats on the interview!!! Good for you.

Secondly, it's not as bad as you make out. Frod's left before. He'll come back. He'll leave again.

Nobody's at each other's throats. Or I missed something. Cal's question is a good one and one that does cross my mind sometime when I think about my campus and other places.

    2. Maybelle: Good luck, let's hope you get the job, and that if you accept it, you feel free to work in more comfortable shoes!

Everyone: Don't worry, kids. I said I'd be back next year.

Sorry I've been so cranky lately, especially to Hiram and Defunct Adjunct and Wylodmayer. It unmistakably shows once again that I really do need to spend more time in meat-space.

For the record, too: I don't think that lecturing with a whip and singing "Kumbaya" are the only choices. My students, however, simply will not do their reading assignments, no matter what. Let's hope yours are better, or at least have higher SAT/ACT scores.

I have another good reason to spend more time in meat-space, too: I think I may have a real publisher for my intro astronomy text now. My last hiatus was spent with one who was floored by things I thought would be the publisher's job, such as copyright clearances. I was dreading having to do the page layout myself. It reminded me of Robert Burnham's Celestial Handbook, a 2000-page, three-volume classic that was rejected by so many publishers, Burnham produced the whole thing on his kitchen table, before Dover finally accepted it. Burnham later said he had nightmares in which he was producing the Encyclopedia Britannica on his kitchen table.

      See you in 2014, then!

    4. Hey, Frod, no worries. Just do what you need to do and take care of yourself, man.

      Best!

  2. I propose we place any fight-instigators on foot rub duty. Unless they're into that. Then they can drop off Maybelle's dry cleaning.
Congrats and every phalange crossed for you!

    1. Now there's a suggestion. There are days when I could us a foot rub even after wearing comfortable shoes.

  3. Having been there--with blistered feet--I empathize! I hope you hear back with a job offer. That's the LEAST they could do if you're willing to torture yourself in shoes that match your outfit. :) I recently saw a bit on "Dr. Oz" about using underarm deodorant on feet to keep them from chaffing... I haven't tried it, but thought I'd pass on the non-info. :)

  4. Hurrah for the campus visit (and nailing it), blood blisters and all. May it lead to an offer!

  5. I must have missed the post where you were made into an official CM mod.

    1. I'm not, but as a member of the community, I wanted to voice my displeasure at the infighting that has people quitting the blog. The last big blowout was just as upsetting, and I really don't want history to repeat itself.

    2. I appreciated it, Maybelle. And good luck as you wait for your news!

  6. Surprising. From his body of work on the blog I would have thought he had thicker skin than that... which is probably what Cal also thought...

    1. We're all expected to be savvy and thick-skinned about blog comments these days, but being criticized in community forums can sting much more than most of us would readily admit.

That's why I'm so grateful to our heroic CM moderators for keeping this place so civil.
