From Adriana in Atlanta.

I want to apologize to my students from fall. I had a bad few months, got separated, miscarried, and stumbled. I know I gave you less than my best and it has eaten at me.

And then yesterday I saw my evaluations: "Prof. Adriana is the greatest. She always makes sure to ask how I am doing getting accustomed to college. She answers emails at 3 am. She makes me think differently. She has shown me what I want to do with my life!"

Oh my dears. I will fight on and do better.

  1. I hear Adriana's angst and I second it.

What a profession. I often forget how much we have the power to do for students and get caught up in the brutal department infighting. Jesus, it is NOT about who gets the best committees, you know?

Thanks for the reminder. Sorry for your hard time...nice to know you still did a great job and showed compassion and strength to your students.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all from Wisconsin...

  2. Adriana, people like you do wonders for the profession. The fact that you were able to make such a positive impact on your students despite a brutal semester outside the classroom speaks volumes about you. Like Wisconsin Will, I'm sorry to read about how many bad things happened. I hope they turn around for you soon.

All the best to the readers - enjoy a hard-earned break.

  3. Sorry you had such a hard semester, Adriana. Congratulations on making it through, and on doing better than you thought with your students.

Also -- there are apparently upsides to being unable to sleep at 3 a.m., and answering student emails instead. It isn't insomnia, it's "availability"!

  4. It really is impossible to know, so many times, what kind of effect we're having. We grade them, but we really don't know them.
