Beating this meme photo to death...from ELS.

  1. A colleague had this one today:
"My high school teacher said I could get one to one lessons if I asked to professors"

  2. I see . . . Were you getting many one to one lessons in high school?

    1. Was the teacher referring to "office hours" and the student heard one-to-one?

    2. Change the 2nd "to" to "the" and it makes more sense. If you ask enough professors, it is possible to get some extra help, one-to-one style. Probably not a full lesson, but close enough.

If it was typed on a phone, the/to substitution is an autocomplete fail I've seen quite a bit. Depending on your typing history, the predictive algorithm could pull up "to" and "the" as top choices when you type a "t" after "asked".

    3. It’s heartbreaking to think that I can't even get close to 140 characters without messing up.

Not sure what's going on with this guy, but it seems he's now approached 3 different proffies with 3 different stories. If it was just the original one, the office hours thing would make a lot of sense.

  3. "My other teacher was such a bitch."

That's always a red flag. Every single time an undergrad has bad-mouthed another instructor to me, the student has always - ALWAYS - proven to be a problem later in the term. Kinda makes you think the student was the one with the problem all along....

    1. We feel much the same way when we're doing a faculty search. New faculty tend to find their new colleagues more like those at their previous gig than not.

When a candidate trash-talks their colleagues during the campus visit, I'm thinking, if we hire you, I give you three to five years till you're trash-talking me to another search. Or worse, you don't even make their short list and you're stuck here, uncollaborative and insufferable.

Mind you, a candidate who dumps on their current administration is far less of a red flag. Should they be hired, they'll find their new administration to be just as bad as their previous, but their new colleagues would agree on that.

    1. I know people are quite averse to the moderator deleting comments, but I think calling her a bitch is reason enough to stop shit like this.

    2. Ok with me when you delete cretins like that.

  5. Good evening, Erin, and welcome to our humble dwelling. Here you'll find the water cooler heavily fortified with bourbon. In case that's not your style, over there is the bourbon.

It seems you are a relative newcomer here, so I'll try to fill you in on how things work in these parts. This is a community very much of, by, and for the community. Being of the community themselves, the moderator (affectionately RGM, or Real Goddamned Moderator) may contribute occasionally, but they also bear no more responsibility for creating content (or lack thereof) than any individual here. Given the extra crap they put up with while keeping things running here, it stands to reason that they should be relieved of the scutwork of generating material ostensibly for the entertainment of others.

When the RGM laments the Thirsty in its absence, I take that as their pining for the "goon old days" when one of the many in the community would have contributed to a tradition well-loved here. When there is no Thirsty, we are collectively and individually responsible for its lack, the RGM least among us. Therefore, what I don't take it for is reason to blame the RGM or to use disparaging epithets. Instead, I invite you to contribute the type of content that entertains you, for surely the rest of the community would enjoy it as well.

In case you prefer something other than bourbon, we are not animals: there is a hosepipe at the side patio from which you may fill your maw to overflowing.

    2. Though I might occasionally vent, grumble, or grouse, I try not to bitch. I think of bitching as the lowest form of complaining. Instead, I try to inform and educate, and to propose solutions.

    3. In case the context of Ovreductd's comment is unclear, Erin/Eren of Yakama made a comment sometime between April 8, 2016 at 11:21 PM and April 9, 2016 at 4:11 AM, but the comment was since deleted.
