Told Ya

"This inconsequential place  has always been a blot on the real world of academe..."

Our famous troll found a clever way to tell us to fuck ourselves in Latin. Big whoop. I've redacted his brilliance but left the comments up.

And, many many thanks to Crystal who gave it a whirl for 6 great months. You have never seen the trailer so clean!

  1. Uh, I'm just one guy, and I'm thankful for Crystal stepping up. But this is not going to work.

    1. There's nobody here anyway. Just give in to it.

    2. That's the part that puzzles me. Apparently we have a stalker.

  4. Fab here. Only 14 different people on the site today. Truly Crystal felt bad but this is no longer a going concern. Will announce something by end of week. A number of people have volunteered to run it, but there is no content to manage. Sorry.

    1. Fuck this. If CM closes its doors, then I'm going to BURN THE WHOLE INTERNET DOWN!.
      ;-)

Seriously, people think that 14 is a low number because The Facebook has a billion users and all that. But, really, when was the last time any of us had a committee meeting with 13 other relatively sane proffies IRL? Even just 4 or 5 is a privilege and a joy.

CM is a refuge, a sanctuary. For those of us who don't worship a God, CM is a kind of holy place. For those of us who do worship a God, perhaps CM is also a holy place. At its best, it is a place of truth and courage and wisdom and all kinds of other stuff.

I'm too drunk to comment further, but suffice it to say that I would be glad to see reruns all summer until things get "humming" again.

Otherwise, know that this has been a good place.

      Thanks, everyone.

    2. It's summer break. When has this place ever been lively over summer break?

Just hand the keys to someone else and see what happens.

  5. Well the page used to have thousands of unique visitors a day, so the final count of 30 yesterday is a little low. But we can't just have the email open. I took down two ads this morning already. It will be addressed. And Bubba, you can't believe how much people hate the flashback posts!

    1. Hate?
Only savages would hate the flashback posts.

    2. Dr. Jekyll: A news report the other day implied that web site visits via mobile apps are not counted in visit statistics.
Prof. Hyde: I usually use an RSS reader to read CM and I've always wondered if those get counted.

  6. The “real world” of academe includes things like five to six figure student debt, academic readiness, student underemployment, grade inflation, and, oh, I don’t know, things like swimmers getting very lenient sentences for “20 minutes of action”.

I missed the part of anonymous’ contribution where he fixed those issues.

As for his Latin, well, his googling skills beat his logic, critical thinking, and pretty much anything else he and his ilk ever posted.

  7. Do people actually complain about the flashbacks? Even though I'm a diehard reader, some I see are completely new to me and always seem well chosen.

    1. As far as I know, there is nothing people haven't complained about.
Real goddamned mail would be funny if moderators didn't have to put up with it!

    2. People always complain about the flashbacks. They say, "Why don't you post some of the new content." Well, when a flashback goes up it's because there is no new content, and all mods have been interested in keeping the page (at least its date!) current.

And Real Goddamned Mail USED to be funny! LOL. But when I got on the account this morning I'm just shocked at how little correspondence there has been. I'd say Crystal got screwed because in my own experience (and with Terry P. especially) we had lots of ongoing collegial exchanges going with lots of regulars. Some folks, I guess, like to talk to us more one on one than in the larger version of the page.

      All good.

  8. I like the flashbacks. And the new content. And the RGM. I've been here since the RYS days, and I've seen the site ebb and flow. I will keep coming back, and posting something when I can, for as long as the site is up. Thanks to everyone who keeps the lights on.

  9. This place saved my life when I was at a very low point. I'll stick by it during its ebb and flow. Things are different now (I've made major life changes), and they are better. This site is important to me and will remain as such.
