This Week's Big Thirsty From Terry P.

Below is my favorite ever Dr. Molly cartoon. She was here so briefly, and I miss her wit. Of course there are lots of people who've passed through these "halls" who have been central figures in our little amorality play. Yaro! Darla! Walter! Me!

Q: Who do you miss from the RYS/CM past?

  1. I was glad to see Greta return. Hiram's been relatively scarce these days, but I think Suzy from Square State commented recently. Peter K and Pat from Peoria used to be around more. Barb from Batavia? Frog and Toad (Marcia Brady)? Anastasia? Eskarina? There are so many.

  2. I miss almost everyone. As OPH said, there are so many, but I look on this in the most positive way I can...their situation is now such that they don't need the solace CM provides.

  3. I appreciate the sentiment in Terry's question. The truth is, that I have contacted most of the prominent members from the past. I do it occasionally, every six months or so. And in many cases those emails come back undeliverable, because members have used temporary or now-defunct email addresses.

  4. I miss Beaker Ben from the 2011 - 2013 period. He was the same then as he is now but 20 pounds lighter.

    Also, Dr. Snarky.

  5. I truly miss reading Yaro's missives. I would cry each time I read a new one. I really didn't care if Yaro was real or not; his prose were so beautiful and from the heart.

  6. I still pine for Stella from Sparksburg.

    1. Me, too. She never did explain why, at her institution, they have a rule that all students who get their dicks stapled to the floor get an automatic A.

I also of course miss Proffie Galore, and Annie Oakley. I'm glad to see Greta is back!

    2. Damn, Proffie Galore! See, if I start listing, I'll miss a whole bunch.

    3. I'd also say Darla, but she appeared recently.

    4. If I start listing, it means I've drunk a bunch.

  7. Fab met him, right? I have to look that up. The "wheel to my barrow..." Gorgeous...

    1. There was an "entire Yaro" collection as a pdf once. I keep a copy in my office, and "the wheel to my barrow" was just lovely.

  9. Angry Archie, Samantha Folkchurch, Ralph from Rutabaga Ranch, Strelnikov, . . .. too many to name.......

    1. Um, Bubba? Ralph passed on. Let's not have a seance: emeritus faculty get annoyed more than enough when called out of retirement.

    2. But, he is missed nonetheless.

At my joint, faculty emeriti regularly appear at meetings to suck the light from the room, making it seem like a seance. We wish they would take the hint that the gold watch means GTFO, but their self-importance blinds them. I've already informed security to bar me from the premises forevermore after I turn in my keys and ID and wipe my hard drive.

    3. What you need is a hammer and a stake. A crucifix and some garlic and holy water can also help.

  10. Walter never did explain how he makes sure his students have read the lab writeup, by telling them, "Cause this shit might blow up." If I told my students that, they would just lie to me that they had done the reading. That's right: my students will rather quite literally risk death than read.

    1. I know, right? It's like they're all Beavis and Butthead. "It could blow up? COOL!"

    2. I want to bang Beavis and Butthead's heads together until one of their heads bursts open like a cantaloupe, and then bash the other one against the sidewalk until it also bursts open like a cataloupe. I know, I'm going to have to smash up lots of pavement before I get joy on #2.

  11. Everybody listed above, and a number of others beside. If I start listing, I'm going to forget someone. I, too, was delighted to see Greta return, and I really loved the work of others who had their own unique genres/formats, especially Sam Folkchurch and Molly (and, of course, Yaro. And our other poet, whose first name was Dick. I'm forgetting his last name, though I know there was a double entendre there -- ah, Dick Tingle. How could I forget that?). Academic Monkey had some fun ideas for posts, too (advice letters, among others).

And then there are those who were having a hard time for one reason or another when we last heard from them. I don't think of myself as particularly maternal, but apparently I've mastered the art of worrying about people (even people on the internet) I haven't heard from. Like EC1, I hope that means their lives have improved (perhaps because they moved on to non-academic work -- a very smart move).

Really, I can think of only two former participants (each with at least two handles/aliases) whom I *wouldn't* be happy to see reappear, both of whom seemed somewhat unhealthily obsessed with the blog for reasons that presumably had little to do with the blog, and both of whom caused the mods a lot of grief. One apparently made an appearance earlier this week; one has been blessedly silent, which I hope means she (and/or her nemesis/alter/whatever) has matured, gotten therapy, gained more confidence in herself, or whatever it took to move on to a happier place personally and professionally.
