I know I'm not the only one in North Eastern State System. Anyone else...
nervous about going to work tomorrow? About a third of our students (and this is true at many of our campuses) are moderate Muslims. About a 10th of our students are terrible stereotypes of Greek System douchebag cliquey bullies. The Muslims are going to go on like any other day, I'm sure. But the douchebags are going to be hung over or high on Red Bulls and looking to get into shit. It's going to be like right after 9/11 when you couldn't be so much as Mexican and pumping gas, without having to worry some half cocked hormonal retard seeing the color of your skin and trying to kick the shit out of you.

My proportions are reversed from yours.... not sure that makes it better.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure exactly what the population proportions are at my school, but two of my closest colleagues are Turkish and Lebanese. Hoping that they will not be harassed this week.
ReplyDeleteDid something happen this weekend? I would google but I don't know what I'm looking for.
ReplyDeleteCheck my post on "An Academic Hit Man"; it will explain everything.
ReplyDelete@Merely Academic just in case you've not found out yet.
ReplyDeleteOsama bin Laden has been confirmed dead by President Obama and military sources.
Now you gave it away!
ReplyDeleteWe've got a visible (though by no means 1/3) Muslim population, plus plenty of white suburban kids (and Hispanics, and Asians, and African-Americans, and Africans, and Europeans, and scattered representatives of other groups, and pretty much any combination of the above you can imagine). I haven't seen/heard of any signs of trouble, and really don't anticipate any, but I could be wrong.
ReplyDeleteI had that same thought -- hope all Muslims in this country are safe from jingoistic morons.
ReplyDeleteJustice my arse.
None of my Muslim students came to class this morning. We'll see what happens this afternoon.
ReplyDeleteThere aren't actually any douchebags in my AM class (lazy whiners, but no fratty assholes) and I was pleasantly surprised by the air in the room. One of them started talking about the Phillies game and got choked up.
I hope my students come back, the finally is fast approaching.
I also had a student with a bonefide family emergency involving having to travel to Nigeria last week. She was to fly back lastnight, but didn't make it to class. I wonder if travel is being affected.
'Mabus' then will soon die, there will come
ReplyDeleteOf people and beasts a horrible rout:
Then suddenly one will see vengeance,
Hundred, hand, thirst, hunger when the comet will run.
There seems to be some doubt about who this "Mabus" is.
ReplyDeleteSo when's the comet?
Didn't Nostradamus tell us the world was supposed to end in 1994? I've lost track.
I'm Muslim, I wear hijab, and I walk by Ground Zero on my way to work on Mondays. I decided to take an alternate route to work yesterday because I was afraid I'd be attacked or something. It was a good idea because from what I heard there were still revelers and others at the site. Yesterday morning I was shaking and crying about going to work, but nonetheless, my students needed a review for the final so I went. In the end, nothing happened and no one bothered me.
