Moderation.

During my earlier stay as moderator, I had a pretty quick trigger on comments that were clearly just devolving into sniping attacks.

That will continue. I don't require explanations or apologies or anything of the kind. If I zap something you said, it's either because it violated blog rules, or it was embedded in a longer comment thread that contained an offending remark.

Especially important to remember is not to go after community members. That does drive readers away from the page, and it's not acceptable. (Darla, you know better.)

Most reasonable readers of this page know what's acceptable and what's not.

I will endeavor to let the page breathe, but I won't let it devolve.

  1. Leslie, you're right. I've been in a crappy mood for three days and this morning I let it spill over. I took it out on someone who's insulted me in the past and I regret it. I apologize to AdjunctSlave and to anyone who read my comment. It won't happen again.

  2. It would be fun, thou, to have now and then a free-for-all flame war post. Bakhtinianly insulated.

  3. Keep on truckin', Leslie. I haven't caught any of the scuffles (which simply shows how quick you've been on the trigger), but things look great from my perspective -- and showing no signs whatsoever of suffocation. Thank you!

  4. Bless you in this effort. I came back today for the first time in months after getting slammed awhile back.

For all I know, the slammer may well have been objectively correct; I just didn't want to hear it at the time.

    1. Welcome back. I've sort of returned recently myself. Hope you have some fun here!

  5. As long as it's Come To Jesus time, I will admit that I shut the comments down on the "Hero instructor" post because I used my jet black humor. I asked that the commments be reopned but Vozhd' said no.

    1. Vozhd is an insult. It's like calling Fab "King Bowtie Shit."

I hope your dues are in order, because if I were in charge I'd just boot your ass from the page.

    2. Strelly's the only one here edgy enough to make a "jetblack" joke about a dead professor who saved his students' lives by trying to subdue his own troubled son.

    3. Strelly was also a good sport when Leslie, during a previous stint as the RGM, pulled a prank that involved creating the impression that he had taken over the page. That post seems to have disappeared, but a record of the aftermath remains. So he may have a bit of unused credit left in his account.

I did wonder what someone had said to get that post locked so quickly; now I know. It sounds like a sad case, and one that could have occurred in any number of workplaces. Whether bystanders were in danger or not, it's hard to tell, but certainly the professor did what he could to minimize that danger, which is commendable.

    4. OMG--it's Terry P. It's Terry P! I've missed you!!!!!!!!!!!

And yes, Strelly gets all kind of leeway. He's old school that way.

    5. I have no problem with Strelnikov. A colleague of the deceseased professor sent me the link for the story, and I thought the joke Strelnikov made would have been very upsetting to Krumm's colleagues, who - I guessed - might have occasion to find the post online.

I took it down, and shortly after another community member made a comment I also thought was inappropriate. I closed the comments for those reasons.

The takeover prank mentioned in Cassandra's comment was done by Cal and Fab. You can't think anyone else's fingerprints would be on something like that.

    6. Well, whaddayaknow. I thought that one was yours, Leslie. It was a good one anyway.

No it doesn't; it just means "leader" or "boss." It's an archaism that is fading away from modern Russian (it derives from a Church Slavonic loanword.)

Boot my ass? You and what army?

  6. Sometimes I can't resist a tease, but I don't take it personally if I get zapped.
