I miss Kimmie, you know, Kimmie of the Kensington Kimmies? I wish I knew what that name was about. I could have sworn I've seen Myth and Isis in the past weeks. But you're right about the rest. Lex was great. Black Dog was ESPECIALLY great.
ReplyDeleteIt's a satire of preppies.
DeleteI miss BlackDog; I think her depression got to her.
I miss BlackDog too. I hope she's OK.
DeleteYeah... BlackDog was always great. I thought I might even meet her last summer (knowing her general location and her boyfriend's favorite past time, too).
DeleteI, too, miss BlackDog. I thought maybe she had returned under another pseudonym, but that one posted only once or twice, and I was never sure; there just seemed to be a few similarities.
DeleteWhere the hell is Eating Low Salt? That guy who did the Foghat video? ELS? Are you there?
ReplyDeleteELS was a real character. I've not heard from him at all and can't remember the last time I saw him comment. Didn't he have a crush on "Marcia Brady"?
DeleteReg, Kimmie writes to me occasionally, is on a year-long sabbatical in India, and has not been keeping up with us.
ReplyDeleteIt clears my nose
ReplyDeleteof all its phlegm
to see Fab Sun's name
and not "THE RGM."
Yeah, fuck it. I got it all worked out. Most people know it's been me, Fab Sun, on the case for the last while, although there is something excellent about the RGM nickname. I have to look up who sent that in.
DeleteI do apologize to everyone for the hard troll-session and my ineffectual and wishy washy approach to dealing with it. I am simply going to act in the best interests of the blog, and if folks don't like it, there are a number of academic blogs out there - none as good as this one! - that they can torment instead.
Your support - even though it's all support I write myself about myself and to myself - is much appreciated.
If I remember correctly, I wrote a post asking for commenters to suggest a nickname. Somebody suggested Read Goddamn Moderator and the new moderator ran with it. A stroke of genius, really.
Delete"I am simply going to act in the best interests of the blog, and if folks don't like it, there are a number of academic blogs out there - none as good as this one! - that they can torment instead."
DeleteSounds good to me (he said to himself).
Didn't Texpat get outed in a stunning display of internet irresponsibility? I missed the showdown, but the aftermath spilled over into comments on the other posts of the day. Once he was outed, he deleted his work and left.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he came back under another name?
Indeed. The only time I had verifiable evidence that someone got "caught" talking poorly about their college and someone actually put 2 and 2 together, it was the result of the writer sending an "out of department" colleague the link to something the writer wrote. The second party posted the item on a college listserv and a departmental colleague of the writer saw the post, saw where the email had originated from and said, "Shit, that's me!"
DeleteThere are about 2 million college proffies in the US alone. Most of us anonymize sufficiently to protect ourselves.
One well known member of this community wrote to me once that he NEVER writes a post about an event that involves his colleagues that has just happened. He will bitch about it a month later when the chances of the story being found so close to its actual date are lower.
I hope Samantha Folkchurch comes back. I still have some of her posts pinned to the corkboard behind my computer.
ReplyDeleteMe, too (on her coming back; I don't have a corkboard behind my computer).
DeleteSchmittyRKD here. I still check the page for funny stories, but I'm not much motivated to comment. Now that I've become a successful and respected student, I've no longer found it necessary to try to hang out with college professors in an anonymous corner of the internet. I see you've been dealing with one of my fellow undergrads who hasn't progressed to this level. Based on his name, my guess is that his dream is one day to cause another financial collapse.
ReplyDeleteI also forgot the password for my account.
I managed to lock myself out of my account for several months. I have no idea how, and was just able to get back in earlier this month. I have been reading consistently, and I've been lurking in the comments (trying to avoid the larger blow ups). I've had a hell of a semester (teaching 7 classes and assisting with 2, across my 2 unis; yup, 9 classes total, because I am certifiably insane) so I haven't had much time for, well, anything really. I have been experiencing my share of the misery, and I have been writing it all down, stockpiling it to contribute over the summer when I expect the page will be leaner.
ReplyDeleteI'm still here, and I'll be back when the semester from hell is finally over.
I'm around, honestly I went from a masters program at second string state university to an ivy PhD program and working my little butt off under the delusions that if I work hard enough I can avoid job apocalypse.
ReplyDeleteCongrats! And good luck!
DeleteAnastasia.... I'm in mourning.
ReplyDeleteI think she has (had?) her own blog, but I can't remember how to get to it.
DeleteI really miss Bitchy Bear. She hasn't been by since the old RYS days, but she could rock the snark like nobody else. Dana from Decatur was a close second. I hope they're out there.
ReplyDeleteWho had the really cool picture of a screaming woman? She was a biology grad student or post doc with depression or other mental illness. Her posts were always worth reading.
ReplyDeleteDid Mid Career Mike make the transition from RYS to CM? His stuff was always good too.
Bipolar Beth...she was indeed really a great member of the community. Cal is in touch with Mike, I know, and I think Mike did at least one or two posts here.
DeleteAs a fellow bio grad student, I miss Bipolar Beth also. I wish her the best and hope she is doing ok.
DeleteI, too, miss Beth. And I'm pretty sure I've seen Mike. Isn't he the one with the "$2,000? Is that, like, for a week?" avatar, or am I mixing him up with someone else?
DeleteMid Career Mike was Liam Neeson (I thought) on RYS. Don't remember about here.
DeleteI believe Middle Aged and Morose may have had the picture you're describing.
Mid Career Mike (Liam Neeson with a mustache) is the one who told the incredible tale of Reamed Ass College, and who ended up - happily, I recall - Soda Pop College in Florida. I don't recall his last post at CM.
DeleteI just googled "Anastasia academic blog" and got a listing for "leavingacademic.blogspot.com". I don't know if it's her. If it is, that would explain why she hasn't been around lately.
ReplyDeleteThe blog linked to her blogger name is still up:
Deletehttp://theoneandonlyanastasiak.blogspot.com/
I'm still here, commenting regularly, posting every now and again. Trying to keep my head above water IRL takes the funny out of me.
ReplyDeleteLurking and occasionally commenting :) The semester's been...Well, interesting is one word for it. Once I get a second to breathe I'll post some of the craziness this batch of students has offered.
ReplyDeleteI have a vague recollection that Hellish Harpy used to post some cool shit, perhaps only in the comments. Don't remember. Where are you Harpy?
ReplyDeleteAnd Dana, I think I remember you. Come back!
