  2. One of my grad school friends had Dr. Haiden as an advisor. For better or for worse, she was prepared, since she already had experience with an alcoholic father, and so had some sense of how to handle him.

Also, I'm not sure this is deliberate (the phrase could easily arise independently, and definitely circulates in the culture separate from one of its original sources), but I enjoyed the reference to one of the funnier passages in the Bible, Acts 2:15 (from the account of speaking in tongues at Pentecost): "Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning." Every once in a while one is reminded that people in Biblical times had a good many behaviors and reactions in common with people 2000+ years later.

And finally, I guess this is a reminder that inappropriate/excessive drinking isn't necessarily a problem limited to underage students (see a post or two below). It also seems to me that if Dr. Haiden could have held off for an hour or so, (s)he could have finessed this situation by bringing a congratulatory bottle of bubbly to share. Drinking at 10 a.m. is just fine when someone just passed her defense, right?
